About Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School

Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School, also known as Borrego Pass School, is a community-based day school serving kindergarten through eighth grade. It is located at the base of a 7,500-foot mountain pass near the crest of the Continental Divide, 65 miles northeast of Gallup, New Mexico, and 120 miles west of Albuquerque. The school can be found on County Road 19, approximately 13 miles southeast of Crownpoint, New Mexico.

Established in the early 1950s as a Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding school, Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School has been a vital part of the local community for decades. Today, it is a Bureau of Indian Education-operated school, proudly serving students from the nearby communities of Littlewater, Casamero Lake, Borrego Pass, Crownpoint, Prewitt, Smith Lake and Mariano Lake.

The school’s student population is 100% Navajo, with all students qualifying for the free and reduced lunch program. At Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School, we provide a culturally supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters academic success and community connection.

The mission of Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School is to provide quality education in a safe, positive learning environment and promote high expectations for our students.

Vision

Our vision is to provide every student a strong foundation to develop mentally (Binisahhakees bidziil dooleel), socially (K’e dinidzin dooleel), physically (A’daa’akondzin dooleel), and spiritually (Idahodilzin dooleel) as they become self-sufficient in their journey through life.

Philosophy

The philosophy of Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School is to create a positive learning environment and provide quality educational programs that will enable students to increase their knowledge, develop essential skills and acquire the attitudes necessary to be successful individuals within the family, peer groups, community and society.

Strategic Transformation of Education Plan (STEP)

Dibe' Yazhi" Habit'iin Community School has implemented the Strategic Transformation of Education Plan initiative – a digital learning portal with a blended learning approach. Our students can maximize this opportunity by accessing the digital learning portal with a 1:1 student-laptop usage ratio. This approach gives our students every advantage with integrated applications, such as personalized and assessment-based math and reading curriculum, Native language and culture educational programs, and accelerated learning strategies for our tailored instruction. Every one of our students benefits from dynamic teaching tools that use state-of-the-art resources.
